Rhidorroch House offers peace and tranquillity within the heart of Glen Achall on Scotland's north-west coast. The large, Victorian highland house, surrounded by mature gardens, stands alone and secluded on a gentle rise above Loch Achall and commands unbroken views up the glen to the east and across the loch to the south: the house enjoys a splendid position from which to appreciate the clear air, wide open spaces and the dramatic quality of light and rich colours unique to the north-west Highlands. Yet just four miles away in the fishing village of Ullapool – a ten-minute drive along the estate's private road – local boats land prawns and lobsters within sight of the lively seafront shops, bars and restaurants. Beyond the house the estate road continues, untarred, alongside loch and river for a further four miles eastwards up the glen where it meets the long hill track over wild, open country to Oykel Bridge. Family and sporting holidays at Rhidorroch House include stalking and fishing as well as offering a variety of indoor and outdoor activities from billiards to barbecues. Designed and built by London architect Talbot Clifton, the house was completed in 1898. Clifton had been granted a lease by the Countess of Cromarty to fish salmon on the Ullapool River and in return for this privilege agreed to build her a house of which she would be proud.

Sporting Holidays
Lets at Rhidorroch House include: salmon fishing (four rods on the Ullapool River and the Rappach) and trout fishing (two boats available at all times on Loch Achall – 50 yards from the house – plus fishing on the estate hill lochs); also red deer and sika stalking and clay pigeon shooting.
(see Estate Activities and Visitor Attractions for more information) With Rhidorroch House as your base, there is always something for everyone to do, no matter what the weather. Estate sport includes stalking and fly fishing for salmon and trout. But outdoors and within yards of the house you can also cycle or walk the eastward track up the glen and into the hills, picnic on the riverbank or barbecue on the lochside. Play badminton or croquet on the lawn by the house, or go for a row around Loch Achall. Even by the roadside, you are likely to see birds of prey, deer, and the estate's Highland cattle and sheep, and wild flowers and orchids.
In Ullapool, on the shores of Loch Broom, it's fun to watch the fishing boats land their creel-caught lobsters and prawns at the pier and, over and above its charming setting, the village offers many other attractions such as boat trips, seafront shops, restaurants and bars, a leisure centre with indoor swimming pool, and Ullapool golf course. Close to estate and the village are many hill, forest and coast walks, pebble beaches, Leckmelm Gardens and artists' studios open to visitors. Rhidorroch is well placed for day trips to, for example, fabulous pure white sand beaches such as Achnahaird, Oldshoremore, Balnakeil and remote Sandwood Bay, or visit the magnificent gardens at Inverewe or, perhaps, make the short ferry crossing to see the thousands of nesting birds on Handa Island.
